My gut feeling based on your comment about brightness of 120 being too dim is that this level should be ok even with daylight in the room - not perfect but just maybe ok. These are not recommended settings and yours likely to be quite different.!! I have found that I can get acceptable print and predictable result for both screen and print. both bright daylight and nightime viewing. What are your target setting values for the following? I have included my current settings which serve me in a less than ideal environment i.e. If it looks great on screen but prints dark then if your final output is print then your brightness settings are probably too high and or you are not using the correct soft proofing - this is unlikely to be a hardware/software issue. How do they look when viewing in bright daylight and darkened room? Can you see the shadows and the highlights in your current viewing conditions? How do these test image pages appear on your monitor.

So while not exactly complying with your test criteria some general points that maybe useful (the following assumes there is no fundamental hardware software fault with equipment and color management is application lead only):ДЄ lot depends on your monitor capabilities for setting brightness and colour balance and your graphics card capabilities - what monitor do you use? Also most important are viewing conditions including ambient light and the surrounding colour of the walls etc. I have no reason to believe that software is problematical but perhaps some research on the datacolor forum may help. It is a while since I used the datacolor software but from memory it does/should work well.

Mount St.Well I use Spyder 2 Pro and calibrate my NEC monitor using NEC Spectraview software which I believe is basICColor or used to be. They may take the cue and tweak theirs a bit if they are 'just a layman' when it comes to photography! An effective 'argument' to present to someone could be just to bring a print along and say 'this is how it's supposed to look'. Once you are satisfied, what is not any kind of standard is how your images will display on any one else's monitor - uncalibrated monitors may be all over the place, as you've seen. They won't be quite identical, especially due to the difference between the monitor's projected light and a print's reflected light but if everything 'took' then they should be good enough, both in color and in overall tones.

The 'acid tests' for calibration could be considered two-prong - how does an image processed withing your system stand up when viewed on a good well-calibrated monitor, and then the real deal is getting a print done by a known reliable printer with no corrections done and comparing the print in good light (again either daylight or special neutral light) and seeing how they match. Make sure that your screen is not affected by artificial light (unless it is verifiably 'neutral/daylight' light (you buy special stuff to get this). Sometimes repeated calibration will finally produce a 'best' result, but it is a toss of the dice. Laptops tend to be pretty much the least reliable when it comes to being properly calibrated/adjusted both in brightness and color.
